Your teeth naturally change color as you age. Years of biting and chewing cause the enamel to wear away, making the yellow dentin beneath increasingly visible.
Other factors that may contribute to tooth stains or discoloration include:
You might also develop discolored teeth if you fail to practice good oral hygiene like brushing and flossing daily.
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure that uses hydrogen-based gels to eliminate tooth stains and discoloration. The gels seep into your enamel and trigger a process called oxidation.
Oxidation causes the molecules inside your teeth to reflect less light, making them appear whiter and brighter.
Global Facial Aesthetics offers two types of teeth whitening:
In-office whitening is an outpatient procedure that can make your teeth up to eight* shades brighter in a single appointment. At the beginning of treatment, your provider covers your gums and tongue with a protective sheet and applies an FDA-approved peroxide solution to your teeth.
The solution rests for 15-20 minutes, and your provider points a special light at them. The light kick starts a bleaching reaction that cuts through years of discoloration. The team repeats these steps several times until your teeth are white and aesthetically pleasing.
Take-home whitening trays make it easy to remove tooth stains from the comfort of home. First, your provider takes digital impressions of your mouth and gives them to the in-house laboratory. The laboratory uses your impressions to create two custom mouthpieces that fit snugly over your teeth.
You line each mouthpiece with a bleaching solution and wear them for several hours at a time, whenever is most convenient. A week or two later, you’ll notice a significant change in the appearance of your tooth enamel.
The results of teeth whitening treatment usually last 4-6 months, but it’s possible to extend them with good oral hygiene. Global Facial Aesthetics recommends visiting the office at least two times a year for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning and brushing and flossing daily.
