Crowns Q&A

What are crowns?

Crowns are ceramic caps that envelop your natural tooth. You may need a dental crown if you have any of the following tooth issues.

  • Cracked tooth
  • Broken tooth
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Interior tooth damage, leading to a root canal

Crowns can also secure dental bridges that replace missing teeth. A dental bridge features two crowns with a prosthetic tooth between them. Dental bridges are a good option for replacing a single missing tooth, but other alternatives like dental implants are available as well.

What is the dental crown process like?

At Global Facial Aesthetics, the specialists use computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) to create CEREC all-ceramic crowns at their on-site dental lab.

The specialists use 3-D images of your damaged tooth to design a well-fitted crown, and then select a ceramic shade to perfectly blend in with your natural teeth.

Because your crown matches your current tooth color, it's ideal to have teeth whitening before you get a new crown. Ceramic crowns don't stain or darken, and they're not affected by teeth whitening products.

Your dentist prepares your tooth by removing any areas of decay along with the first few layers of tooth structure. Then, they use bonding cement to affix your new ceramic crown.

How do I maintain dental crowns?

You can maintain the appearance and function of your dental crowns through consistent dental hygiene at home. Brush your teeth — using a soft bristle brush to avoid scratching the ceramic — and floss carefully between and around every tooth daily.

Visit Global Facial Aesthetics twice a year, or as recommended, for teeth cleaning and dental checkups. The specialists evaluate your crown's strength and stability during these appointments, and they can schedule crown repair or replacement where needed.

When you take good care of your crown, you can expect a lifespan of at least 10 years on average.

At their in-office dental lab, Global Facial Aesthetics makes it easy to get beautiful custom-made crowns. If you need to restore a damaged tooth, reach out to the office by phone or through the online scheduler to arrange your crown evaluation.
