Children's Dentistry Q&A

What is children’s dentistry?

Children’s dentistry is a specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of oral health issues in kids and teens. Young people are more susceptible to certain problems like cavities and tooth misalignment than their adult counterparts.

Regular children’s dentistry checkups present an opportunity to build a relationship with their provider, learn about good oral hygiene, and catch potentially serious issues when they’re most responsive to treatment.

What services does children’s dentistry provide?

Global Facial Aesthetics offers an array of children’s dentistry services, including:

Oral exams

During an oral exam, your child’s provider assesses the health and condition of their teeth, gums, and smile. If they uncover any potential issues, like swollen gums or early signs of tooth decay, they can order additional testing and provide treatment.

Teeth cleaning

Teeth cleaning is an outpatient procedure that removes plaque and tartar from your child’s teeth and beneath their gum line. Afterward, their provider polishes their teeth with gritty toothpaste, flosses their teeth, and applies a fluoride treatment to lower the risk of cavities.

Digital X-rays

Digital X-rays use advanced technologies to provide detailed photographs of your child’s tooth roots, jaw, and alveolar bone. Your child’s provider uses this information to detect potentially serious issues not visible to the naked eye, including pulp damage, deep decay, or impacted teeth.

Dental sealants

If your child regularly experiences cavities, their provider might recommend dental sealants. Sealants are thin coatings made of plastic applied to the tops and sides of your child’s teeth. They provide a protective barrier and prevent harmful bacteria from causing tooth decay.

Orthodontics uses custom oral appliances to straighten crooked, crowded, or misaligned teeth. Global Facial Aesthetics offers clear braces with ceramic brackets as well as clear aligners.

A dental filling is a restorative procedure that addresses tooth decay. During treatment, your child’s provider removes the decaying portion of their tooth and replaces it with a composite resin that mimics the color and appearance of their natural tooth enamel.

How often should my child participate in children’s dentistry?

Global Facial Aesthetics recommends making a children’s dentistry appointment for your child two times a year. If they have a history of cavities, gum disease, or other more serious issues, more frequent check-ups may be necessary.
