Periodontal Disease
Periodontal Disease

Individual bacteria are not so harmful but when they collect and form a BIOFILM this is when they become infective and destructive. Stringent home care will disrupt the individual bacteria from collecting together to form the BIOFILM that left unattended leads to disease. Research has shown if we disrupt the bacteria every day they cannot gather to form the BIOFILM. This is why it is essential that everyone become an expert at cleaning his/her own mouth and do so every day.

Periodontal disease is often not recognized in its early stages by the patient. Initially the gums are affected by the more vicious bacteria and then the bone surrounding the teeth begins to be dissolved away. It is not normal for gums to bleed, bad taste or bad breath nor should the teeth be loose.

Dr. Alder and Skirius and the staff at Global Facial Aesthetics are dedicated to coaching you on the techniques and instruments (tooth bush, floss, stimulators) so that you can become highly proficient in caring for yourself. We have many patients who have little or no dental disease and only need a periodic cleaning and check up with us. This is our goal for each of our patients.

Management of periodontal disease begins with diagnosis and documentation of the severity and locations of the disease. Each person reacts differently to various forms of treatment so an individual treatment plan is proposed for each patient. Removing the BIOFILM above and below the gingiva is a basic step for each person afflicted with periodontal disease. Simultaneously we begin coaching on how to manage the Biofilm yourself. Research has shown it takes a year of dedicated homecare and periodic office visits to change the numbers and kinds of bacteria in the infected mouth to the more compatible types of bacteria that help us digest and do not viciously attack us. This is a team sport with the patient being the star player and Dr. Alder or Dr. Skirius and our staff playing the supportive roles. We may involve a periodontal specialist to help the team with specific aspects of the treatment. Until the infection is under control the patient should refrain from direct contact with others so the disease is not spread to loved ones.

Dr. Alder is a proponent of the INFLAMATORY MODEL OF DISEASE. There are many comorbidities of periodontal disease. People with periodontal disease often develop: Hypertension, Heart Disease, Stroke, Kidney Disease, Preterm low birth weight babies, Respiratory disease, Diabetes and Cancer, Arthritis and other chronic diseases. The Toxins produced from the Biofilm are released into the blood stream and tissues and evoke an INFLAMATORY RESPONSE that causes the body to react defensively. Our body is designed to heal itself and fight off attacks from foreign bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms but we must do our part in protecting ourselves by becoming dedicated and expert caretakers of our environment. The mouth is a major gateway for microorganisms to enter the body and as such requires diligent maintenance.

Dr. Alder has employed the use of LASER therapy to kill bacteria and control periodontal disease. This technology and experience is not available in most dental offices. He has also used LASER therapy to stimulate bone growth. Depending on the severity and host response we utilize several methods of managing periodontal disease. After diagnosis and documentation the teeth are cleaned free of any foreign debris and biofilm above and below the gums. We employ regenerative therapies when possible and respective surgery when needed. We prescribe medications and home care techniques to combat the disease 24/7.

Other environmental conditions that assault the health of the mouth and beyond are ingrained in the modern American diet, pharmaceutical remedies and habits. Smoking is one of if not thee worst habit for oral health or our general health. We can refer you to professionals that can help. Many prescription medications needed to manage other diseases are harmful to oral health. We can identify them, determine the risk and prescribe therapy to ameliorate or diminish the effects. Dry mouth is a common side effect on many anti-hypertensive drugs, soft tissue hypertrophy is another. Americans consume extraordinary amounts of SUGAR and Sugar Substitutes. What ever happened to drinking water? Entire aisles of the grocery store are dedicated to distribution of soft drinks. Stay out of those aisles and do your teeth and body a favor. Recent research has classified 65% of Americans as overweight or worse. Prediabetis has become a new focus in health care.

Expert self-administered oral hygiene, a balanced diet, exercise and regular dental visits are your best chance to enjoy wonderful health throughout your life. We at Global Facial Aesthetics will help you achieve the knowledge, skills and professional help needed to enjoy this journey through life.
